Controller's Office (Detroit, Mich.) scrapbook, 1892-1909.

Scrapbook, 1892-1909, with Gladding's bookplate on the first p. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings from the Detroit Free Press and Evening News, concerning the financial condition of Detroit; politics in the selection of employees; financial statements, 1892-1908; advertisements for bids on city jobs, 1892-1901; obituaries of Robert Green Ingersoll and Francis Ashbury Blades; and biographical information on Gladding and his family. Several letters of recommendation for Gladding from his previous employers, including J.L. Hudson, are included, as are a few memos from the Controller's Office. Some miscellaneous poems and clippings are in the rear of the scrapbook. The contents and pages of the scrapbook are quite acidic. The spine cover is missing. The covers of the scrapbook are marbelized paper with black trim on the edges.

Gladding was the son of James M. Gladding (d. at age 74 on Jan. 27, 1894). Frank served as bookkeeper for Detroit's Controllers, 1892-1894 [maybe until 1908 or 1909?]. He had a daughter, Lucy, who married Harry Dekker of N.Y. (N.Y.) on April 10, 1899. Prior to being the bookkeeper, Frank had worked in several Detroit general clothing stores, including E.S.
